The CityHealth community mourns the untimely passing of Oakland Fire Department Assistant Chief Sean Laffan. Our hearts go out to the entire Laffan family. Indeed, we grieve alongside all first responders who serve our neighborhoods every day.
In Memory of Assistant Chief Sean Laffan
“Sadly, overnight Oakland Fire Department Assistant Chief Sean Laffan died of an apparent heart attack.
Chief Laffan was on duty at City Hall yesterday when he collapsed. He was rushed to Summit Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he died overnight.
Thank you to the members who responded last night. They went to the hospital and assisted Chief Laffan’s family. Also, Laffan’s son is a probationary Oakland firefighter. He was on duty yesterday, so he was able to attend the hospital.
This morning I passed on our collective condolences. Specifically, I reached out to the Oakland Fire Chief, members of her command staff, and the Local 55 President.
Funeral services are pending. Meanwhile, a procession is being organized for today. Our Traffic Division members are engaged in that.
While many of us don’t know Chief Laffan, his death does remind us of what’s important. Ultimately, it is our families and our colleagues that matter most.”
The CityHealth Community Stands with First Responders
Moments like these remind us why community matters. CityHealth is a healthcare provider in Oakland and San Leandro. In fact, we see health as more than just medicine. It also includes the bonds we share with those who protect us.
First responders like Chief Laffan put their lives on the line every day. Consequently, their health needs deserve special attention. The CityHealth community provides care to firefighters, police officers, and EMTs. We also serve other essential workers who keep our cities safe.
Furthermore, we know that grief affects entire communities. It does not stop with one family. When a leader like Chief Laffan passes, the impact ripples through every firehouse. It touches every shift and every family tied to the department. For that reason, CityHealth supports both physical health and emotional well-being.
Additionally, first responders often face unique health risks. The CDC notes that firefighters face higher risk for heart disease. Because of this, regular check-ups matter. Preventive care can save lives. The CityHealth community is here to help with that kind of ongoing care.
