What Is a Steroid Shot?

A steroid shot (also called a cortisone shot) puts anti-inflammatory medicine directly into a specific area. These are not the steroids athletes misuse. Instead, they are the same type of hormone your body naturally makes to fight inflammation.

Because the medicine goes directly to the problem spot, it works faster than a pill in many cases. Most injections also include a numbing agent, so you get immediate relief while the steroid takes effect over the next few days.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, cortisone shots are one of the most effective short-term treatments for joint and soft tissue swelling.

Can Urgent Care Do Steroid Shots for Joint Pain?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons people come in. Providers can inject a steroid directly into an inflamed joint — knees, shoulders, elbows, ankles, wrists. Because the shot goes right into the joint, swelling and pain drop much faster than with pills alone.

Conditions that respond well to a joint injection include:

  • Osteoarthritis: Knee and shoulder pain from worn-down cartilage
  • Bursitis: Swelling of the cushioning sac around a joint. Common in the shoulder, hip, and knee.
  • Tendinitis: Inflamed tendons, such as rotator cuff or elbow issues. However, Achilles tendon shots are usually avoided because of rupture risk.
  • Post-injury swelling: A painful, swollen joint after a sprain or strain

Can Urgent Care Do Steroid Shots for Allergic Reactions?

Yes. For moderate allergic reactions — hives, widespread swelling, severe itching — a steroid injection reduces inflammation quickly. Because it works systemically, it reaches all affected areas at once.

However, for severe allergic reactions with throat swelling or breathing problems, epinephrine comes first. After that, steroids help prevent a second wave of symptoms. If you have a severe reaction, call 911. For moderate reactions, urgent care handles it well.

Does Urgent Care Do Cortisone Shots for Poison Ivy or Skin Rashes?

Yes. For widespread, severe poison ivy or contact dermatitis, an injection works much faster than a week of steroid pills. Because the full dose delivers right away, the itching and swelling drop faster than starting low and building up with tablets.

Urgent care can also inject a steroid directly into a large, inflamed acne cyst or nodule. The pimple typically shrinks within 24–48 hours. However, this is for large, painful breakouts — not regular blemishes. CityHealth has a dermatologist at our Oakland location on Wednesdays for skin concerns.

What to Expect During a Steroid Shot at Urgent Care

Here’s how a cortisone injection works when you come in:

  1. Provider checks the area first: They confirm the shot is right for your condition. In addition, they look for signs of infection. Steroid shots weaken the immune response locally, so injecting into an infected spot makes things worse.
  2. They clean the skin: The spot gets cleaned with antiseptic. Sometimes a numbing spray is applied first.
  3. The injection: The provider gives the shot with a fine needle. The whole thing takes under a minute.
  4. Numbing relief starts right away: You’ll feel less pain within minutes from the anesthetic. However, the steroid itself takes 1–7 days to reach full effect.
  5. Follow-up care: Rest the joint for a day or two. Ice the area if it’s sore after the numbing wears off.

How Fast Do Steroid Shots Work?

It depends on the type of shot:

  • Local anesthetic in the injection: Works within minutes. However, it wears off within a few hours.
  • Cortisone (joint injection): Full effect in 1–7 days. Relief can last weeks to months.
  • Muscle injection (for allergies or rashes): Takes effect within 6–24 hours. Because the dose is absorbed throughout the body, it works faster for whole-body reactions.

Who Shouldn’t Get Steroid Shots?

Steroid shots aren’t right for everyone. Your provider checks for these before giving one:

  • Active infection in the area: The shot can make an infection spread faster
  • A broken bone in the joint: That needs orthopedic care first
  • Allergy to the steroid medication
  • Poorly controlled diabetes: Because steroid shots raise blood sugar temporarily, blood sugar needs to be watched after the injection
  • Too many recent shots: Providers typically limit shots to 3–4 times per year per joint. So if you’ve had recent injections elsewhere, mention it.

How Many Steroid Shots Can You Get Per Year?

There’s a limit. Most providers give no more than 3–4 shots per year in the same joint. Because steroids weaken tissue with repeated use, too many injections can damage the cartilage over time. Therefore, they work best as a short-term solution — not a substitute for physical therapy or other long-term treatment.

For whole-body conditions (allergies, asthma flares, poison ivy), the limit is less strict. However, providers still try to use the lowest effective dose. In addition, steroid shots are not a cure — they buy time while the underlying problem is treated. So if joint pain keeps coming back, talk to your provider about next steps like physical therapy or a specialist referral.

Steroid Shots vs. Oral Steroids — Which Is Better?

It depends on the condition. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Steroid shots: Best for localized problems — one joint, one tendon, one bursa. Because the medicine goes directly to the spot, higher concentrations reach the tissue without affecting the whole body.
  • Oral steroids (like prednisone): Better for whole-body inflammation — widespread rashes, asthma, severe allergies. However, they come with more side effects at higher doses, including blood sugar spikes and mood changes.
  • IM (muscle) steroid injections: Similar to oral steroids in effect, but faster. For example, an injection for poison ivy or an asthma flare works within hours instead of waiting for a pill to absorb over a day or two.

Your urgent care provider will recommend the right option based on your specific condition. In addition, they’ll explain what to expect and when to follow up.

Steroid shot timing: immediate numbing relief, full steroid effect in 1-7 days
Steroid shot timing: immediate numbing relief, full steroid effect in 1-7 days

Does urgent care do steroid shots for poison ivy?

Yes. For widespread or severe poison ivy, a muscle steroid injection works much faster than a week of steroid pills. Because the full dose delivers right away, itching and swelling reduce faster.

How much do steroid shots cost at urgent care?

An urgent care visit with a steroid injection typically runs $150–$400 depending on your insurance and the type of injection. However, this is far less than a specialist visit for the same treatment. CityHealth accepts most major insurance plans and offers self-pay rates.

Does urgent care do steroid shots for allergies?

Yes. For moderate allergic reactions, urgent care can give a steroid injection alongside antihistamines. However, for severe reactions with throat swelling or trouble breathing, call 911 first. In addition, steroid shots are not the same as allergy immunotherapy shots — those require an allergist.
