Urgent Care for Tetanus Shot: Can You Walk In and What to Expect

Urgent Care for Tetanus Shot: Can You Walk In and What to Expect

You stepped on a nail or cut yourself on something dirty — and now you need a tetanus shot fast. Urgent care for tetanus shot needs is one of the most common walk-in services available. You don’t need an appointment. Most visits take under an hour. So if you’re wondering whether urgent care gives tetanus shots, the answer is yes — and here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Does Urgent Care Give Tetanus Shots?

Yes. Most urgent care centers stock and give tetanus vaccines — both the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) forms. Because tetanus concerns often follow an injury, urgent care is a natural fit. You can get your wound looked at and your vaccine in the same visit. No referral needed. However, if you want to confirm a specific clinic has the vaccine, call ahead before going.

When Do You Need a Tetanus Shot?

Not every cut needs a booster. Whether you need one depends on the type of wound and your vaccine history. Here’s how to decide:

You likely need a tetanus shot if:

  • You haven’t had a booster in 10 years — or 5 years for dirty or deep wounds
  • The wound came from something dirty: metal, soil, or any contaminated object
  • You had a puncture wound, animal bite, or deep cut
  • You stepped on a nail, wire, or sharp object outdoors
  • You’re not sure when you last had a tetanus shot

You probably don’t need one if:

  • You had a booster within the last 10 years for a similar wound type
  • The wound is a minor, clean surface scrape — no deep puncture involved

When in doubt, go in. Tetanus is rare in the U.S. because of vaccines — but it’s serious. The fatality rate in untreated cases is 10 to 20 percent. As a result, the risk of skipping a booster you need far outweighs the inconvenience of getting one you don’t.

Urgent Care for Tetanus Shot: What the Visit Looks Like

Here’s what happens when you come in:

  1. Check-in and triage. A nurse takes your vitals and asks what brought you in.
  2. Wound check. The provider looks at your wound, cleans it if needed, and sees if stitches are required.
  3. Vaccine history. They’ll ask when you last had a tetanus booster. Bring your vaccine card if you have one — but if you don’t, that’s fine too.
  4. The shot. It goes into your upper arm. It takes a few seconds.
  5. Discharge instructions. You get wound care guidance and information on what to watch for at home.

In most cases, the whole visit takes 30 to 60 minutes. Furthermore, if your wound is simple and you just need a booster, it can be even faster.

Td vs. Tdap: Which Vaccine Is Right for You?

The type you receive depends on your age and history:

  • Tdap — Covers tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Adults who haven’t had it get this first. You only need it once. After that, Td is the standard booster.
  • Td — Covers tetanus and diphtheria only. This is the routine 10-year booster for adults who’ve already had Tdap.

Your urgent care provider will check your vaccine history and pick the right one. If you’re unsure what you’ve had, they’ll typically give Tdap, since most adults don’t know whether they’ve received it as an adult.

Side Effects of the Tetanus Shot

Tetanus vaccines are safe. However, mild side effects are common and short-lived:

  • Sore or tender arm — peaks at 24 to 48 hours, then fades
  • Mild swelling or redness at the shot site
  • Low-grade fever or fatigue — less common but normal
  • Mild headache or body aches — brief and manageable

Serious allergic reactions are very rare. However, tell the staff right away if you have trouble breathing, face swelling, or a rapid heartbeat after the shot — urgent care clinics are ready to handle reactions.

Warning Signs of Tetanus Infection

If you had a wound and now feel sick, watch for these early signs. According to the CDC, tetanus symptoms include:

  • Jaw stiffness — trouble opening your mouth (lockjaw)
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms in your neck, shoulders, or belly
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Fever, sweating, or rapid heartbeat

Symptoms appear 3 to 21 days after exposure. If you notice any of these after an injury, go to the ER — not urgent care. Active tetanus is a medical emergency and needs hospital care.

Can You Get a Tetanus Shot at Urgent Care Without an Injury?

Yes. Routine 10-year boosters are available at urgent care even without a current wound. If your booster is simply due, you can walk in and get it. In addition, urgent care can often update multiple vaccines in one visit if you’re due for several. Call ahead to confirm what’s in stock.

How Much Does a Tetanus Shot at Urgent Care Cost?

With insurance, the tetanus shot is usually fully covered — either after an injury or as part of a scheduled vaccine. However, without insurance, expect to pay $20 to $50 for the vaccine itself, plus the urgent care visit fee. As a result, the total self-pay cost for a wound visit with a tetanus shot typically runs $150 to $250. Because many urgent care centers offer self-pay pricing, ask about that rate when you check in. Furthermore, some pharmacies carry the vaccine at a lower cost if you don’t need wound care at the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly should I get a tetanus shot after a cut?

As soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours for dirty or deep wounds. The bacteria that cause tetanus work fast inside a deep puncture wound. So don’t wait days. Walk in today if you had a significant wound and haven’t had a booster in the past 5 to 10 years.

Do all urgent care centers carry tetanus shots?

Most do. However, supply can occasionally run low. Call ahead to confirm. In addition, some pharmacies also carry the vaccine, so that’s another option if your nearest urgent care is out of stock.

How often do adults need a tetanus booster?

Every 10 years with the Td vaccine. However, for a high-risk wound — a deep puncture, bite, or badly dirty cut — your provider may recommend a booster even if you had one within the past 5 to 10 years. Therefore, the wound type matters as much as timing.

Does insurance cover tetanus shots at urgent care?

Yes, in most cases. Most plans cover the shot when it’s given after an injury or as part of your vaccine schedule. As a result, your cost is usually low or zero. Ask the clinic to check your coverage before the visit if you’re unsure.
